Ryan Beatty is back with a bang! The 27-year-old singer-songwriter is keeping true to his promise of not releasing his last masterpiece with his third studio album, Calico, set to drop on April 28. And if the first preview is any indication, this album is going to be a doozy!
The single “Ribbons” takes us on a journey through a late night in California that leads to the early hours of the next morning. Ryan’s airy piano melody paired with the searching lyrics captures the essence of that moment perfectly. As he sings, “Who’s gonna hold you whilе you sleep/It’s brave to be nothin’ to no one at all.”
But wait, there’s more! Beatty also shared a poem that captures the essence of the album, with beautiful and haunting imagery. From “citrus kiss” to “cows howl behind the slaughterhouses door,” Ryan sets the scene for a deeply personal and emotional journey.
Recorded between Valentine Recording Studios and Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La, Calico features contributions from some of the biggest names in the industry like Dylan Day, Matt Chamberlain, Sam Gendal, Rob Moose, and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
And while Beatty didn’t give us much of a sneak peek into the album, he did let us know that he’s happy with it. “I’ll save my monologue for another day,” he wrote on Instagram. “But for now you should know that I’m smiling.” With an album as powerful as Calico, we can’t help but smile too!
